Project Descriptions

A sample of the planning and engineering projects completed by David Venhuizen, P.E.

Hidalgo County Colonias
Describes facility planning conducted for 26 colonias (subdivisions lacking adequate water and/or wastewater facilities) in Hidalgo County, Texas. The results show that decentralized management concepts can produce wastewater systems costing less than half the cost of conventional, centralized strategies.

Washington Island
The planning process for a wastewater management system on Washington Island, Wisconsin, is reviewed. Describes the demonstration project to confirm capability of a denitrifying sand filter concept to perform there and formulation of a decentralized management system for the island.

Quemado
Review of the facility plan conducted for a wastewater system to serve Quemado, Texas, a colonia in Maverick County. A full spectrum of options were explored, from individual on-site systems to conventional, centralized systems. The cost effective solution in this situation is a centralized plan employing "alternative" collection and treatment technologies.

Elysium
A residential and commercial development in Austin, Texas, this project is served by a high performance biofiltration treatment system, with system effluent running to a subsurface drip irrigation system to water landscaping on the project site.

TxDOT Rest Areas
Three systems have been designed for Safety Rest Areas operated by the Texas Dept. of Transportation (TxDOT). These systems utilize a high performance biofiltration treatment system and use the effluent for irrigation of the rest area grounds.

One-World Theatre

A performing arts center on a rugged, environmentally sensitive site employs a high performance biofiltration treatment system. The effluent is pumped to drip irrigation fields on the project site.

Reynosa Maquilparque

A study of installing a "waste" water system focused on maximizing beneficial reuse of reclaimed water in a maquiladora (border area industrial park) near Reynosa, Mexico.

On-site "waste" water system for individual homes

Review of high performance biofiltration/drip irrigation systems designed for single family homes in the Austin, Texas, area.

El Salvador
A project funded by U.S. AID. A seminar was conducted in San Salvador to acquaint Salvadoran, engineers, planners, and regulators with the decentralized concept of wastewater management and high performance biofiltration treatment technology. CARE El Salvador was contracted as a partner to design and install a demonstration decentralized concept system employing a high performance biofiltration treatment plant in a small community.

Winfield Township
A facility plan being conducted to compare the costs and benefits of a decentralized concept wastewater system to a conventional, centralized plan previously prepared for the township.
